Department Of Chemistry

Chemistry is a branch of Science, the study of which unfolds the mystery of life and Universe and helps to apply chemical Science in Various field of our day today life to make us more developed and to have longer, healthier and more comfortable life. The Department of Chemistry stands for excellence in chemistry education. Chemistry is one of the core-subjects of Physical & Life Science. The Department of Chemistry takes pride in its teaching excellence and advanced Laboratory facilities. Since 1994, the establishment year of the Department of Chemistry has been fulfilling its commitment providing knowledge of Chemistry to the undergraduate students. Today with highly qualified academic staffs and with sufficient lab facilities, the Department strives for academic excellence through creative learning and diverse research in Chemistry and related fields.

Department of Chemistry was established in the year 1985 officially with concurrence of Government and affiliation by CHSE Odisha. The Department is in progress by the dedicated Service of the Head of the Department and other members of the Department. The encouragement of the Principals at different times is also praise worthy. It has a strong record of achievement in chemistry with the support of a dynamic team consisting of teaching staff, non-teaching staff and inspired students.

             The Dept. is imparting teaching to +2 & +3 streams from 1985-86 and 1993-94 respectively. +3 Hons. Course opened from 2006-07. Currently the Dept. affiliated for 144 Honours and 144 Generic Elective students. The excellent result of the students has been attracting the meritorious students to take admission in this department. The achievements of the honours students of this Dept. have placed the College in a distinguished position in the University. The friendly attitude of the staff of the Dept. creates a very good atmosphere in teaching learning & personality development of the students. The members of the faculty are having specialization in various fields of the subject. A good number of pass-outs get absorbed in reputed government and private sectors like Vedanta Alumina Ltd., TCS, Defence Services, Manufacturing Industries, Academic Institutions, Banking even Overseas which is ever highest among the academic Departments of the College.

             The Dept. is also conducting regular extra/co-curricular activities like Weekly Seminars, Induction programme for new comers, Group discussions, Student Counselling, Annual Study Tours, Get-togethers, Exit Meeting etc to have an all-round development of the students which is highly essential now- a-days to be successful in the competitive world.

              The infrastructure of the Dept. is growing day by day. The dept. has a well – equipped laboratory required for junior as well as for degree students. The Dept. has modern equipment like digital burettes, digital pipettes, water analyzers, single & double distillation apparatus, analytical balances, digital balances, computer with internet connectivity, bottle dispensers, conductometers, pH meters, water baths, hot air ovens, digital melting/boiling point apparatus, vacuum pumps, shakers, hot plates, TLC, heating block, Kjeldhel apparatus, Soxhelet apparatus, Colorimeters etc. The Dept. is also ICT enabled with multimedia projector, smart board & LED Panel for smart teaching & learning. Computer having latest O. S. with 2 4 x 7 internet Connectivity & Laser Printer also provided.

             Activities of the Department like Chemistry Society “ANWESANA” provide students with a forum to express themselves finely and prove their capabilities beyond classroom. It organizes weekly seminars, extramural lectures, annual festival “CATALYSIS” and intercollegiate competitions like Science exhibitions etc. An annual magazine “ELEMENT” is also published incorporating the weekly seminar matters and creative writings of the staff & students of the dept. The Dept. library “INSPIRE” provide books to Hons students’ for one complete semester. Students also publish their creative writings in the wall magazine “CREATE”. Every year the Department is conducting welcome ceremony cum induction program at the beginning of the session to welcome the freshers and the first and second year students’ bid farewell to the final year students at the end of the session. This tradition helps the students to come close to one another to develop good relationship which helps them to work cooperatively for the betterment of the Department also helps to develop their personality. Teacher’s day is celebrated to promote teacher taught relationship. The students of the Department are associated with various extra curricula activities of the College such as student’s election, Annual Sports, Literary Competition, N.S.S, Red Cross, Scout Wing of the College.

Our vision leads us and mission follows to achieve the goal. We are sincerely trying our best to bring overall qualitative structure on academic excellence. Class room teaching is becoming more and more qualitative with use of latest teaching aids like projector, smart board etc. To create qualitative practical scientific knowledge and thoughts and to make them research oriented in future, Laboratories are well equipped and practical classes are perfectly conducted.
